 r sometimes known as John Simpson Kirkpatrick.
Some say he was a ratbag and a deserter but this did not stop Simpson and his donkey helping hundreds of injured diggers at Gallipoli in 1915.
This quiet soldier, originally from the north of England, just helped his mates before being killed himself - a real Dinkum Aussie! He was killed by a sniper's bullet in Shrapnel Gully on May 19th, 1915, aged 22.  |
